Just finished watching an old Law and Order Criminal Intent. Vincent d’Onofrio was the best in that show. He gave life and character to that long running show. I like watching the way his character’s mind works. His thoughts and his actions are brilliant. This particular show got me disturbed, however – deeply, deeply disturbed. When you’ve experienced sexual insults, you can heal and grow and evolve and be happy but you can never erase the insult.
Non-consensual sexual acts are one of the deepest violations that can ever occur to a person, especially to a child or young adult. It’s a violation in the darkest sense of the word. Violation. Even with the best of care, something is robbed from that person – some sense of innocence or trust that can never be replaced. The shame, anguish, anger and horror cut as deep as a canyon. And quite often, the victim is blamed with excuses like “She provoked this” or, “She shouldn’t have dressed so provocatively.” What excuse can you make up for a child who has no awareness of how to dress or behave and should have never, ever been touched in such an inappropriate manner????
Sobering facts taken from the RAINN website:
- 97% of rapists never spend a day in jail.
- Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted
- 44% of victims are under age 18
- Approximately 2/3 of rapes were committed by someone known to the victim.
If you or someone you know has been sexually abused, get to safety and get help. Speak out, shout out, scream, let your voice be heard. There are numerous organizations in the world to protect and deal with the victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse. RAINN is one of them. I wish you the very best of luck in seeking help.
