I like to be funny. I like to entertain. I pepper my books with thrills, sexy scenes and humor. But at the core of all I do, say and feel, is someone who has healed from abusive situations and sexual misconduct and wants to support and encourage people to seek healing and change within themselves.
The statistics for sexual abuse are staggering. 44% are under age 18. 80% are under age 30. Every 2 minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. But…and here’s the horrid truth – 60% of those assaults are NOT reported to the police. 15 to 16 rapists will never spend a day in jail.
Why do you imagine people don’t report something as life changing as sexual assault? Is it the shame that is associated with the act? Or the threat coming from the perp – “if you tell someone about this little act, you’re going to pay for it!” Or, the wondering what your family and friends are going to do, say or think about what YOU did to cause something like this to happen. Or maybe the victim tries to minimize the damage done. According to R.A.I.N.N., “The most common reason given by victims (23%) is that the rape is a “personal matter.” Another 16% of victims say that they fear reprisal, while about 6% don’t report because they believe that the police are biased.”
I’m sure each case is unique but, if you have experienced sexual abuse or abuse of any kind, talk to someone safe – a friend, a therapist, a loved one – and report it and seek healing. It can be a rocky road but the results are worth it – I have a wonderful relationship and an amazing life as a result of all the healing I sought. You can, too.
